I simply love monsoon season. That fresh scent of earth as soon as rain hits the soil and the vibrant greenery everywhere calms my soul. But, with all of the goodness monsoon brings – it brings frizz too. The excess humidity can leave your hair super frizzy and unmanageable. And God knows how much I hate those stubborn flyaways!
I have fine hair. Having fine hair is a lot like owning a cashmere sweater. Both a blessing and a curse- while they feel soft to touch but it comes with a whole lot of maintenance.Â
When fine hair gets dry, it causes wild frizz which can be so frustrating, especially when nothing seems to tame it. Before we get to the remedies, let’s understand the reasons for frizzy hair. Knowing the exact reason will help you know the best possible way to manage it.
Reasons For Frizzy Hair
Most of us aren’t exactly sure what causes frizzy hair. Yes, humidity is one but there are several other reasons too.
- Humidity: We all know that major reason for frizzy hair is humidity. But what does humidity do to our hair? Your hair which was all bounce and shine suddenly becomes frizzy and flat during monsoon. This is because when the air is humid, level of hydrogen increases. And guess what! Your hair are the first to know it. It creates weak hydrogen bonds between the humidity and our hair strands which messes up your hair. Dry hair becomes overdried leading to frizz.
- Washing your hair with very hot water: While hot water feels so good on those cold winter mornings but washing your hair with hot water does exactly the same thing as humidity does to our hair. It is always best to wash your hair with lukewarm water.
- Harsh Styling or Chemical Treatments: Chemical treatments, harsh styling products and heat styling, strip the hair off their natural oil making them fragile and dry leading to frizzy hair that are hard to touch.
- Friction: Rubbing your hair the wrong way can also lead to frizzy hair. Backcombing or teasing the hair, towel drying, and similar practices can cause friction.
- Over-Washing Your Hair: If you have thin fine hair then you may be tempted to wash them everyday because they tend to get greasy fast. But, too much shampoo especially those foamy ones also strip your hair of their natural oil. Wash your hair 2 or maybe 3 times a day, depending upon your hair type or how dirty your scalp feels.
Ingredients Used and Their Benefits
Now that you know what causes frizzy hair, here are 2 simple hair masks recipe that can do wonders in managing your hair. The ingredients used in these masks perfectly suits thin-fine hair with low porosity. They will penetrate easily without weighing down your hair.
I have been using these hair masks for years now and it does great things to my hair. I apply this mask once every 2 weeks not only in monsoon season but also winter season when the air is dry.

- Aloe Vera: It is your best friend if you have fine low porosity hair. It contains many active ingredients that can add strength and shiny to your hair. It has fatty acids, amino acids and is rich in vitamins A, B12, C, and E. It helps to calms itchy scalp, deep cleans oily hair strands, repairs damaged hair strands and may also promote hair growth.
- Raw Honey: Raw honey is brilliant ingredient that helps to restore moisture in dry damaged hair. Honey is a humectant, which means it naturally attracts water from the air. This property of honey helps to add moisture to the hair.
- Cold Pressed Castor Oil: Castor oil contains ricinoleic acid, which hydrates hair. It is also extremely nourishing for your hair strands due to its high content of fatty acids, such as linolenic acid. While, it is also claimed by many that castor oil helps to promote hair growth but there is not much research done on it. But for hydration, yes! it definitely does the job.
- Hibiscus Flower: These flowers nourishes the hair follicles. Amino acids in hibiscus flower and leaves, softens the hair, promotes hair growth and adds shine.
- Coconut Milk: It is rich in lauric acid which has the ability to penetrate hair easily and strengthen the cuticles. It slows hair loss. Fatty acids in coconut milk adds moisture making it silky smooth just after a single wash.
How To Make And Apply Hair Mask
Hair Mask Recipe 1

- Depending upon your hair length take fresh aloe vera gel. I have below shoulder length hair, so for me half a cup was enough.
- Blend the gel in a mixer jar for a few seconds till it becomes foamy and gets a flowing consistency.
- Take it out in a bowl. Add one tsp of raw honey and one tsp of cold pressed castor oil. Mix it well
- Apply the mask from roots to tips in downward motion. Massage it for couple of minutes. Tie your hair in a loose braid or a bun.
- Wear a shower cap to lock in moisture. Keep the mask on for 45 minutes to an hour and then wash it with lukewarm water.
Hair Mask Recipe 2

- Take fresh aloe vera gel depending upon your hair length. Extract the gel and add it in a blender jar.
- Wash one hibiscus flower along with 3-4 leaves. Use only the petals and bud of the flower. Put the leaves, petals and bud in the blender.
- Now blend both aloe vera gel and hibiscus flower and leaves to form a gel. Sieve it through a strainer which has bigger holes.
- To this add 4 to 5 tbsps of creamy coconut milk and mix well.
- Apply this from root to tip. Cover your scalp with a shower cap to lock in moisture. Leave it for 45 minutes to an hour and wash it off with your regular shampoo.
Tried-Tested Tips To Prevent Frizzy Hair
- Use a microfiber towel or old cotton t-shirt to gently blot your wet hair dry. Traditional towels can create friction and lead to frizz.
- Regular trims are essential for frizzy hair. Split ends and damaged hair are more prone to frizz, so keeping your ends healthy can reduce overall frizz. You should aim at trimming your hair once every 2 months in monsoons.
- If your hair are too dry, use a deep conditioning mask once in a week or 10 days. Dry hair causes more frizz. I personally use L’Occitane Repairing Mask or Loreal Absolute Repair Hair Mask.
- Avoid open hair, hair styles. You should either braid, bun or put your hair in loose ponytails. Always apply a light weight oil like jojoba oil on the lengths. This will protect hair from external moisture from invading and cause hair to frizz or become fuzzy and messy.
- Allow hair to air dry or only dry with a blow dryer set to a slow, cool/cold setting.
- Lastly and most importantly, incorporate foods along with vitamins and nutrients to encourage moisturizing strands from the inside out. Stay hydrated always!
