Easy Apple Puree with Cinnamon

Apple puree is a simply no fuss recipe for infants. It is a wonderful first food for infants above 6 months. This was the first baby puree I served my child along with Broccoli Puree and Peas Potato Puree.  I have been making this recipe for over 10 years now and my child loves it. He enjoys it with his oatmeal breakfast. He also enjoys it eating cold on its own or smothered on a toast as a delicious snack.

The key to making a smooth and creamy apple puree lies in gentle simmering of apples along with spices you want to add. This way apples chunks absorbs the flavour of spices better. 

You can also choose different method of cooking apples. You can cook apples by baking, slow cooker, steaming, stove top or pressure cooking. I personally prefer simmering apples on stove top because I love the crisp flavour of simmered apples.

Peel Tip: If you are using organic apples then, you can choose to peel or not peel apple. However, if this is your first time cooking apple puree for your baby, I would suggest to remove the peels. Peels have a lot of fibre which maybe too much for your little one. Once the baby gets used to apple puree, you can keep the peels.

1. In a saucepan, put apple chunks, water and cinnamon. Bring it to boil then lower the heat to medium. 

2. Simmer and let the apples cook for 12-15 minutes or till they are completely soft and tender. Allow it to cool slightly. 

3. Now transfer all the ingredients to a blender jar. Blend for 1 or 2 minutes or till you get a smooth puree.

4. If you want a chunky puree, pulse the mixture 5 to 6 times until you get the desired consistency. 

5. Serve at room temperature to your baby. 

  • Use any variety of apple for making apple puree. Just make sure the apples you are using are ripe and sweet. Do not use unripe or sour apples for apple puree.
  • The key to making creamy apple puree is to cook apples on medium flame for 12-15 minutes.
  • Feel free add spices of your choice. Once your child is used to purées, you can experiment with different spices. I love adding cloves, nutmeg and dry ginger powder or freshly minced ginger to apple puree.

You can store this puree in an airtight glass container for 3 to 4 days. 

This puree can also be frozen for upto 2 months. Freeze in a freezer storage container. You can also freeze the puree in an icecube tray or in a ziploc bag. Do not forget to label the date. Also, do not overfill the container.

While this apple puree is delicious on its own but once your child is used to solids and different textures, you can give different combinations of purees.

Ingredients

  • 3 Apples peeled, cored and chopped
  • 1/8 tsp Cinnamon Powder
  • 70 ml Water
