The invention of this oil happened when I once had sore muscles because of exercise. They say “muscle pain = happy pain” after a workout but to me it felt like I was hit by a truck. That is when I started to look for natural alternatives to soothe sore muscles. I didn’t want to resort to pain relief ointments available at medical shops. so, I started looking for a natural pain relief massage oils.

While searching to buy online, I stumbled upon many such natural oils which used ingredients easily available in our kitchen. That is when it hit me, why not make preservatives and chemical free oil at home with quality ingredients! You don’t have to be an expert! The process is super simple.

I did some further research on natural pain relievers spices and for an appropriate method. So that is how my friend, this natural remedy came into being. And what a blessing this oil has been in my life!!

A pain relief oil is a formulation that you apply directly to sore areas. Gently massaging the oil into the skin boosts blood circulation and helps relieve sore muscles, back pain, muscle tension and joint pain.

This oil also works effectively for relieving menstrual cramps in women. While it is best to avoid using it on infants but children, adults and even grandparents can safely benefit from this natural remedy.

I have been using this oil for over 5 years now. I also used to massage my then 6 year old son’s legs and feet with this oil whenever required.

Mustard oil contains a chemical compound, allyl isothiocyanate. This compound has been well studied for that helps in lessening pain related to arthritis and muscle pain. It also contains omega-3 fatty acids that help to ease stiffness and pain of muscles and joints.

This oil is an excellent choice for massage as it is loaded with nutrients including vitamins and minerals, such as calcium, copper and zinc. This oil helps to  improve the bone mineral density which further improves quality of bones. Copper present is this oil, helps to reduce pain and swelling in joints and muscles.

It has been used as a natural remedy for pain relief since ages. It’s anti-inflammatory properties help in healing the pain and ease muscle tension. As per several studies, allicin found in garlic also helps to boost blood flow to the joints which reduces stiffness.

Ginger is rich in gingerol, a bioactive compound with potent anti-inflammatory properties. This can help in reducing inflammation and stimulate blood circulation. The warming effect of ginger helps to relax muscles and eases tension.

It is commonly used in pain-relief ointments and oils because of it’s soothing and pain relief properties. It is especially used to manage arthritic pain because of its anti-inflammatory properties.

As per a study done by National Library of Medicines, fenugreek seeds have significant anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic activities which are due to the presence of linolenic and linoleic acids.

In the world of Prophet Muhammad, these seeds were described as “remedy for all illness except death.” Black seeds have been proven to reduce inflammation and relax muscles.

Cinnamon and Clove are known in Ayurveda for their anti-inflammatory properties that help the body to fight pain, naturally. Several studies show that the cinnamon extract decreases inflammation in the body. Cloves are also used in many topical pain relief balms to help improve circulation. Eugenol, a key component of cloves, is known to reduce inflammation and pain.

Nutmeg, also known as Jaiphal, has been used for centuries as a natural pain reliever for inflamed joints and a mild sedative. This is a non-negotiable ingredient. DO NOT think of skipping it!

Camphor when applied externally, numbs the nerves endings which helps in reducing the pain. It’s readily absorbed in the skin, producing a cool sensation and acts as a mild local anesthetic.

1. Heat both, mustard oil and sesame oil in a wok on low flame. Do not use nonstick or aluminium wok. 

2. Add garlic, ajwain, fenugreek seeds, cinnamon, cloves and nigella seeds (kalunji). If using raw ginger instead of ginger oil, then add that as well with all the ingredients.

3. Let it all cook on low flame till garlic and other ingredients turn completely black. This will take you roughly 15 minutes. 

4. Once off flame, allow the oil to cool.

5. Then add camphor, nutmeg oil and ginger oil. Cover the wok & let it all stay infused for 24 hours. 

6. Now sieve and add the oil in a sterilized glass bottle.

Note: To make this oil effective, do not skip any of the ingredients above. Cloves, Ajwain, Nutmeg oil, Sesame seeds, Nigella seeds, Fenugreek seeds are some of the very effective natural pain relievers with anti-inflammatory properties. 

This massage oil, without a doubt, will help you in muscle and joints pain relief. As an added bonus, it also gives you a calming and relaxing effect after application.

You must apply warm oil on the affected area. A gentle massage with this will help you relax and will also improve blood circulation in that area.

You should keep the affected area covered with warm cloth after applying the oil. This will enhance the effectiveness and efficacy of the oil. The maximum heat you will generate, the faster this oil will work.

I personally prefer applying it overnight as the oil gets more time to absorb and I can keep the area warm for a longer period of time.

Additionally, regular massage will help you overcome the problem of sore muscles. Therefore, keep massaging regularly and reap the benefits of this oil.

  1. You must always do a patch test before applying this oil as it contains certain essential oils. You can apply little oil on your forearm before using it.
  2. Do not apply this oil on a broken or irritated skin because it contains camphor.
  3. Do not directly heat the oil. Since it contains various essential oils and camphor, it is advisable to not directly heat this oil. You can keep the bottle of oil submerged in hot water for sometime to warm the oil.

You should keep the oil in a sterilized glass bottle at room temperature. Avoid a plastic bottle. This oil will last you anywhere between 6-8 months if kept away from humidity. It is best to keep the bottle away from direct sunlight and always make sure the bottle is sealed tightly.

Homemade Pain Relief Oil | Growing Kids Pain Relief

Materials

  • 100 ml Cold Pressed Mustard Oil
  • 100 ml Cold Pressed Sesame Oil
  • 15 cloves Garlic smashed; not chopped
  • 2 tbsp Bishop Seeds/Ajwain
  • 2 tbsp Fenugreek Seeds/Methi Dana
  • 1 tbsp Nigella Seeds/Kalunji
  • 2 inch Cinnamon Stick/Dalchini
  • 25 Cloves/Laung
  • 1.5 tbsp Pure Camphor/Kapur powder it in mortar pestle
  • 20 drops Ginger Essential Oil or use 3 tbsp minced ginger
  • 15 drops Nutmeg Essential Oil

Instructions
